Services
Preventive
The first and possibly most important step in any dental care plan is partnering with your family dentist to prevent common oral health concerns. At Nykamp Dental, Dr. Nykamp and his dedicated dental team are here to help patients with a wide array of general and preventive dental services to keep their smiles whole and healthy at every age.
Cleanings
Professional teeth cleaning removes plaque, tartar and bacteria, and helps prevent periodontal disease. Before your cleaning, we will check the health of your teeth and gums, give a head and neck exam, and take x-rays if needed. We will talk to you about your medical history and medications. We will discuss how to improve your home care and offer suggestions on brushing and flossing techniques. Your cleaning and preventive care are all about keeping your teeth and gums healthy and strong. Our Lansing dental team will help you stay on top of your oral health. Following your exam and cleaning, we can address your needs and treatment options.
Exams
Regular dental exams are essential in preventing the onset, progress and recurrence of many dental conditions and diseases. Dental exams and digital x-rays help recognize oral health problems like gum disease, tooth decay, teeth grinding, TMJ dysfunction, and even oral cancer. As a way to help maintain a healthy and beautiful smile, it is important to perform comprehensive examinations to rate and ensure overall oral health.
Sealants
A dental sealant protects your back teeth from tooth decay by applying a thin plastic coating to the chewing surface. A dental sealant is a protective barrier that guards the chewing surface of the tooth making it smooth and easier to clean. Deep grooves and fissures on the back teeth are hard to clean the decay that can cause bacteria that can grow. The application of a dental sealant is a quick, and easy procedure that can help save time, money, unnecessary discomfort, and most importantly, your teeth.
Cosmetic
There's so much that can be done these days to improve the appearance of a person's smile. From professional whitening treatments to comfortable and realistic porcelain veneers, there's a wide range of exciting possibilities.
The first step in any smile makeover is a thorough dental examination to make sure that your cosmetic problems really are just that and not a sign of underlying dental disease. Once your health has been established, your smile can be cosmetically enhanced in a variety of ways.
Teeth Whitening
Dull, yellow or discolored teeth can hurt your self-confidence. Teeth whitening works for stains on the enamel of the tooth. When you eat foods that tend to leave stains, such as raspberries, red wine or coffee, some of the residues remain on your enamel. Over time, these teeth stains create a dull and dingy look for your smile. Our Lansing practice features relatively inexpensive teeth whitening service and requires little to no surface work to be done before its application.
Inlays & Onlays
Porcelain inlays & Onlays are used to fill teeth with larger cavities eliminating the potential of a silver filling cracking or shifting which leaves the possibility of bacteria growing or the tooth to further decay. Inlays and Onlays allow for less of the tooth to be removed when applying the treatment while also strengthening the tooth structure. Inlays and Onlays are known for being a more durable and protective option for keeping your teeth free of decay.
Veneers
Ceramic veneers provide biological compatibility, outstanding wear resistance, and exceptional natural appearance. Veneers can help mask discolorations and tooth stains that cannot be removed through tooth whitening procedures. They are best used for repairing large chips and cracks and reshaping teeth. Veneers are typically favored over crowns because of the minimal shaping that takes place with the tooth.
Cosmetic Bonding
Composite tooth bonding is a restoration where Dr. Nykamp repairs the affected tooth with carefully selected shades of composite, recreating the natural, life-like appearance and translucency of your natural tooth. Typically used for small chips, decay, cracks, imperfections and covers tooth stains and discoloration. Dental bonding with composite is often used as a more conservative and cost-effective choice to ceramic veneers.
Restorative
Dental Implants
Of all the ways modern dentistry has to replace missing teeth, dental implants are by far one of the best options available. There is no tooth-replacement option that will give you a longer-lasting result. Implants also help preserve tooth-supporting bones that naturally deteriorate when a tooth is lost. A dental implant most often takes the form of a small, screw-shaped titanium post that replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. The surgical procedure used to place an implant is actually quite minor and routine, requiring only local anesthesia in most cases.
Full & Partial Dentures
Dentures are removable and replace missing teeth. They restore your smile, your ability to chew and your ability to speak well. Whether you are missing several teeth or all of your teeth, these appliances may be right for you. They are customized to fit your mouth perfectly. First, we take impressions of your mouth and jaw. We also focus on evaluating the full face to pick the correct tooth shape and size that will look most natural. Once your denture is made, we can make adjustments to it to ensure the perfect fit.
Full dentures replace all of your teeth. Designed with functionality in mind to be form-fitting, they are molded to fit the contours of your gums and work in harmony with your facial musculature. Creating the best set of dentures takes a combination of science, art and experience. With Dr. Nykamp’s experience, he is able to fabricate dentures that will be the closest replacement for natural teeth. Most importantly, a full set of dentures can do wonders to restore the confidence that comes from showing off a bright, winning smile.
Partial dentures are created for people with one or more missing teeth. Using impressions of your mouth, Dr. Nykamp will work to design a prosthetic or replacement that will be secured by your remaining teeth. It is also color-matched to your existing tooth shade in order to blend in well with your smile. Once your new partial denture is ready, we will make sure the tooth replacement fits comfortably.
Crowns
Dentistry is an art as well as a science; dental crowns offer a perfect example of this. A dental crown or “cap” is a covering that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth. It can also replace a tooth entirely as part of dental bridgework. A crown completely covers a tooth above the gum line while strengthening damaged teeth allowing them to function normally again. When crafted from today's high-tech ceramics, crowns are virtually indistinguishable from a person's natural teeth. They can even be designed to improve upon a tooth's original appearance and function better than before.
Dental Bridges
A dental bridge consists of a false tooth that is fused between two dental crowns. The crowns are cemented over the teeth adjacent to the gap, positioning the replacement tooth in an empty space. This option is ideal for patients who do not want, or who are not candidates for, dental implants because they can be supported by implants or your natural teeth. If a tooth is missing, a dental bridge can restore oral function and add elegance to your smile.
